This is our first summer planting a garden, and the results have been average at best. Every day we all go outside and look to see if any vegetables are ready to be picked. About eighty percent of the time there’s nothing ready yet. A few weeks ago E realized that our neighbors tomatoes were producing fruit and she thought that meant they were hers for the taking. We made a rule that if the tomatoes grew on our side of the fence, then she could eat them. Otherwise, they were the neighbors. When our sweet neighbors heard that this was the rule, they started pushing ripe tomatoes through the fence onto our side for E to enjoy. Wow. Sometimes it’s the simplest gestures that have the biggest impact. E’s day was made when she discovered the surprise, meant just for her to enjoy. The world could use more simple kindness. Here’s our reminder to be friendly to our neighbors, those next door and those in our community, and to spread a little simple kindness today.
